About the Artist

Julian Anniss, artist, was born in London in 1961 and educated at Christ's Hospital School, and Eastbourne and Exeter Colleges of Art.

At college Anniss was influenced by The Euston Road School of Painters, especially William Coldstream and further artists such as Euan Uglow and David Hockney.

Anniss believes in painting his life as it unfolds and in painting realistically; giving 100% to the work, immersing himself in the subject, thereby producing paintings that are, by their very nature, both pure and thought provoking at one and the same time.

Subject matter often includes flowers seen as "Still Life" which Anniss, with his unusual eye, more often than not describes in vibrant and exciting colour, which some viewers can find challenging.

Turning his eye to landscape, Anniss uses free flowing brush marks that look random and uncontrolled, but therein lies the talent of a painter with natural ability. The sheer weight of colour confronts the viewer who perhaps is not used to seeing paint used in such an expressive way. In this Anniss asks us to look again and redefine what we consider the landscape should look and feel like.

His paintings have been exhibited widely, both in the West Country and London.
